Losing Alfie: A Personal Reminder of Why We Do This

During 2024, our family experienced the heartbreaking loss of our beloved dog, Alfie. Alfie was not our first experience of loss as a family. Years earlier, we lost Zac, a goodbye that changed us forever and ultimately became the reason Beloved Pets was founded.

Losing Zac showed us how isolating and overwhelming this time can feel, and it planted the seed for the love, care, and compassion we wanted to offer other families. Losing Alfie brought those feelings back in a different, deeper way, because this time, we walked through every step ourselves, knowing exactly what each part of his journey involved.

As a family that does everything ourselves, including the cremation, Alfie’s final journey was one we had to carry out with hands that were heavy with grief. Facing the reality that this goodbye was our own, carrying out Alfie’s final care ourselves was an emotional weight that is hard to put into words, even for those of us who do this work every day.

This experience was a powerful reminder that grief does not follow a schedule, and it does not soften simply because you are familiar with the process. It reinforced just how essential compassion, patience, and gentleness are when families are walking through loss, and why nothing about our work should ever feel rushed or impersonal.

Alfie’s passing strengthened our commitment to continue offering the love and care that defines our work. Both Zac and Alfie are woven into the heart of Beloved Pets, and into every goodbye we are entrusted with.

Their memories continue to guide how we work, why we take the time we do, and why we never forget that behind every farewell is a heartbroken family.
